Areas of specialisation

Prof Sultan's clinical practice is concentrated on the conditions where early treatment makes the greatest difference to how long, and how well, a person lives.

Core areas of practice

  • Stroke prevention with one-day carotid artery surgery and stenting
  • Keyhole (endovascular), open and hybrid repair of aneurysms of the chest and abdomen
  • Aortic dissection, including complex pan-aortic disease
  • Restoring blood flow to the legs and salvaging limbs threatened by critical ischaemia
  • Visceral, mesenteric and renal artery reconstruction
  • Keyhole treatment of varicose veins as a four-hour admission
  • Chronic venous ulcers and refractory wounds, including hyperbaric medicine
  • Diabetic foot disease and prevention of amputation

Techniques pioneered by Prof Sultan

Over four decades Prof Sultan has developed and published a number of techniques now used internationally, including subintimal angioplasty, the DRESS technique for complex aneurysm repair, the kinetic elephant trunk for pan-aortic dissection, the TIGER protocol for aortic dissection below the diaphragm, the PASHA and ARAFAT techniques for diagnosing concealed endoleaks, triple neuroprotection for stroke beyond the usual 24-hour treatment window, and the Bridge VAC and compression method for refractory venous ulcers.
