Screening for longevity

Most people who live well into their eighties and nineties share one thing: their arteries stayed healthy. Screening is how you find out whether yours are.

Why arteries decide how long you live well

Heart attack, stroke, ruptured aneurysm and limb loss are the events that most often cut a life short or take away its independence. All four begin silently in the artery wall, years before any symptom appears.

A 15-minute ultrasound of the aorta, the carotid arteries and the circulation to the legs finds these changes early, when the treatment is usually simple: medication, lifestyle change, or a planned procedure rather than an emergency one.

Who benefits most

  • Anyone over fifty-five who wants to stay active and independent
  • People with a family history of aneurysm, stroke or early heart disease
  • Those who smoke, or who have high blood pressure, diabetes or raised cholesterol
  • Anyone who simply wants to know where they stand, in numbers rather than guesswork

What happens with the results

Your findings are explained to you on the day, in plain language. If everything is healthy you leave with reassurance and a baseline for the future. If something is found, you leave with a clear plan, and a report is sent to your GP.

Vascular screening is covered by most Irish health insurance plans once you have a referral letter from your GP. Please check the details of your own policy with your insurer.
